About Ciudad Juárez is a vibrant and strategic metropolis, deeply rooted in the heart of Chihuahua state, Mexico. More than just a geographic point, the city represents a crucial economic and cultural axis on the Mexican northern border. Having been designated one of the country's largest cities, its influence extends far beyond its direct municipal limits.
It is important to note that when we talk about Ciudad Juarez, it is essential to consider the vastness of its metropolitan region. This gigantic urban area covers approximately 2.6 million inhabitants and encompasses not only the Juárez core but also the neighboring city of El Paso, located in Texas, United States. This bilingual and economic conurbation makes Ciudad Juárez one of Mexico's seven largest metropolitan regions, consolidating it as a nerve center of intense commercial and population movement.
The identity of the city is marked by its historical function at a vital crossing point of trade routes. The fact that it was founded on the banks of the Rio Grande (or Rio Bravo), which crosses the territory, solidified its role as a meeting point for cultures and cross-border economies.

History The origins of Ciudad Juárez trace back to a significant period in Mexican colonial history. The city was originally established in 1659 under the name Paso del Norte, a title that already indicated its importance as a vital natural and commercial crossing. At that time, the settlement was vast, extending along both banks of the mighty Rio Grande.
The historical development of the area was profoundly shaped by international political changes, with territorial division being a turning point in its trajectory. It wasn't until 1848 that the territory was formally divided between Mexican and American (US) nations.
This geopolitical split forced the area to restructure under new flags. The Mexican side of the settlement, after this crucial division in 1848, underwent a new phase of development and identity. It wasn't until 1888 that the name Paso del Norte was officially changed to Juárez, a name that carries with it the memory of its national redefinition.
