History Belmopan's history is marked by significant events and resilience. Its ascent to central importance was no accident but a direct response to monumental historical challenges faced by the country. Originally, the population center was elsewhere, in Belize City, which had served as the capital for a long time.
However, this status was drastically altered by an unprecedented force of nature event. In 1961, Belize City suffered immense damage from devastating hurricanes.
